Our History

Pastor Hatchett had a vision to expand. After leading souls to Christ for 10 years, in November 1956, Rev. Hatchett, along with his wife Eliza Hatchett, trustees W.C. Jordan and wife Willie Mae Jordan, Jessie Pearl Jordan, J.C. Parker, Ira Gamble, Helen Alberta Cornett, and husband Vernon Cornett and Donella Horton and husband Norse Horton, purchased the property for Mt. Herman at its present location.

We worked, prayed, and served as we prepared to build. Sis. Helen A. Cornett prayed the first prayer at the groundbreaking ceremony. 

We marched in our new building in 1958, and what a glorious time we had. Rev. M.L. Hatchett pastored until went to be with the Lord in March 1970. The total years of his leadership were 24. 

Rev. I. H. Stubblefield was elected to be the pastor of Mt. Herman in 1970. On the 20th day of October 1971, we purchased our first parking lot, by buying a house at 3203 Kentucky, having it torn down. The church was reconstructed (bricked) and rededicated on July 2, 1978. We purchased a three-unit apartment next door in April 1985. 

Pastor I.H. Stubblefield went to be with the Lord in 1985. Total years of his leadership were 15. 

Rev. E.L. Stubblefield was elected to be pastor in 1986. A three-unit apartment, reconstructed to be a fellowship hall, was completed and entered in November 1988. The fellowship hall was dedicated and named Hatchett-Stubblefield Fellowship Hal on the 8th day of December 1996. The wooded lot next to the fellowship hall was purchased in July 1989. The trees were cut down and the lot was cleared to make another parking lot. We purchased the house on the west side next door in November 1991. We had the house moved and added to the parking lot. Mt. Herman continued to progress. On the 9th day of February 2001, we purchased a house directly behind the fellowship hall, and had it demolished for additional parking. On the 24th day of February 2004, the church purchased a house on the corner of Kentucky and Brewster. We had it demolished for additional parking as well. 

From 1946 to the present, Mt. Herman has never had a mortgage on anything. In December 2006, after 20 years of service and pastoring, Pastor E.L. Stubblefield retired. 

In March 2007, Rev. Trevy E. Washington was elected as Mt. Herman’s 4th pastor since its inception. Early on in his ministry, on September 1, 2008, hurricane Ike nearly destroyed the sanctuary. Our newly elected pastor led the largest building campaign to date as we renovated our entire sanctuary. We increased the space in both restrooms, enlarged our vestibule, and redesigned our balcony area. Our pulpit was redesigned and enlarged, sound system upgraded, and sanctuary chairs added giving our building the modern look we enjoy today.

“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” Matthew 16:18 

Pastor Washington was not a general contractor or designer but testifies “the Lord” gave him the design plans and how to accomplish the 6-figure project. We have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, trusting in His holy word. He’s never failed us yet. We forge ahead with great anticipation of what God is going to do through Mt. Herman in the years to come. What a mighty God we serve.
